ChinWig - Rising Record’s most recent signing are recording
ChinWig are the most recent band to be associated with the Rising Records label. Recently they have added a new bass player to the lineup to release their vocalist for unfettered live performance. The band line up is now:
Pete Bangert on lead guitar, guitar synth and backing vocals;
Krys Bangert on lead guitar;
Mick Shedd on lead vocals;
Gordon Henderson on drums and backing vocals;
Aidan Hall on bass guitar;
Alan Bangert is the Sound Engineer and Road Manager for the band.
It was beginning to look a bit like a family outing until Aidan joined, but to put it in context Pete said, “It does appear to be a bit of a clan gathering but really I have worked with Al as my band sound engineer since the early 80’s. I don’t see the slightest reason for changing that, he is great fun to have around and he has a good pair of ears. As for working with Krys, this is the ideal opportunity to get on stage with my son before he moves on to more time consuming personal projects. It is something I have been looking forward to for a long time and has to be done before I get too old and crusty. I am taking Krys along to prop up my mortal remains, and fill in the guitar gaps my ageing fingers leave behind. We should not diminish the roles of Mick and Gordi and now Aidan. Together they are over half the band and are definitely not related to us”
As per the original intention, the ChinWig line up includes twin guitars with guitar synth, use of guitar modelling and so on with the intention being able to play almost any combination of required sounds on stage. Their intention remains, “To entertain and challenge the audience whilst having a bl**dy good time ourselves”.
The band is now in pre-gig rehearsals pulling the set material together from original material adapted from the Phoenix Rising back catalogue, Pete’s latest album material released under the Pig’n’aif project name and new material currently being written by Mick and Pete for the project. In parallel to rehearsals, the band has been recording and expect to have an album’s worth of material to promote and release by the time they start live gigs. We would expect to be making the material available for download and for release on CD in due course.
Pete Bangert
Pete is a long serving musician from the Sheffield area. He formed Chinwig for a number of reasons. Primarily, Mick (in his inimitable style) made it quite apparent that it was time to get off his arse and start gigging again.
This prod also fitted in with a number of other reasons for starting out again. He says, “I wanted the opportunity to gig some of his latest writing, work on stage with my son Krys and play with Gordon again before sliding down hill finally. I am not as fast as I used to be but that is not necessarily a bad thing. I always think the is no point in playing something unless it says something and the message is often lost in too many notes nowadays”.
Pete manages the Rising Records label and has his own recording studio as well as mobile facilities.
Live, Pete plays a Kahler equipped Gibson Flying ‘V’ with an Axon guitar synth, through a predominantly digital setup. He uses RFX, Palmer, Terratec, Orange and Vox equipment as well as Line6, Ibanez, Yamaha and bespoke guitars. Pete’s floorboard equipment is composed of midi controllers for the digital equipment.

Krys Bangert
Krys plays lead guitar alongside his dad Pete in the band, He is a very capable musician, well versed in modern rock guitar technique and theory having learned from the Satriani and Morse schools of guitar playing, amongst others. His areas of expertise compliment Pete’s and vice versa, so it is a comfortable partnership (based on intimidation and beatings - although Pete would like Krys to stop hitting him at least).
Krys says, “ I quite welcome the opportunity to work with the ‘fusties’. It gives me the chance to pick up on a wealth of experience both from the musical and the business end of the game. It also gives me a chance to teach the old dogs some new tricks”.
Pete thinks it is a win-win situation. “Having Krys in the band means I can leave more space than in the past and it allows Krys to express himself more fully without having to worry about covering the silence. It leads to a less fraught experience all round”.
Krys also works with his own band project under the name of Setsudan (Check out their web site www.setsudan.co.uk).
Krys plays Ibanez, Peavey and Tanglewood guitars with a Peavey JSX head through custom cabs. He uses Boss and Alesis effects and controls his rig via Midi.
Mick Shedd
Mick is a well known musician from both the local and national scene. For this outing he has moved from his beloved bass to concentrate on delivering lead vocals for the band. He is an immensely powerful and expressive vocalist, at home bringing his approach to most forms of material including rock, blues and soul/funk. As he puts it he loves to sort out the “stops, starts, farts and barks” in the music, a task he is eminently suited for, as he has a very famous set of tonsils on him. He is a multi-instrumentalist and will be adding other colours to the music from time-to-time as
required.
He has performed extensively in the South Yorkshire region in such bands as Shedd's on Fire, Shedds the follow up band to that and in the past Equinox and Fixer. The latter band also worked in Europe. Pete and Mick had a short sojourn with ToshRollo back in the late '80's and a renewal of their musical partnership is long overdue.
About ChinWig Mick said, ”I am very excited about the challenge of the material and working with the guys. The emphasis is on creativity and musical colour and it should challenge the audiences and lead them in different directions. It is good to work with a bunch of committed guys who know their stuff”.
Gordon Henderson
Gordon Henderson is a well know drummer and musical character from the Yorkshire area. He is a genuinely nice guy with a quick sense of humour and musicians love to work with him because of that (as long as you don’t get on the end of one of his ‘five minute’ stories).
Gordi is at home playing most forms of rock and blues and maintains a high degree of energy in his performance throughout. He has known Mick for a long time around the Sheffield circuit. He and Aidan have quickly established a mutual musical respect that should pay dividends when they get it together on stage for the first time.
Gordi previously played in Phoenix Rising with Pete and Alan and he subsequently worked in local band Stormbringer (ex-'Non-Stop Walter Band').
Pete said, “it is really good to be working with Gordi again because he knows exactly where we are coming from and there is no awkwardness brought about by having to establish a completely new working relationship all round. I have a great deal of respect for him as a musician and as a friend - but don’t tell him that...”.
Gordon now plays a Sonor kit with Drum Workshop pedals and Paiste and Zildjian cymbals.
Aidan Hall
Aidan recently joined the band to play bass, expanding the line up and taking over the duties from Mick, allowing him to concentrate on vocals. He had big shoes to fill but succeeded with style. Aidan is a versatile and skilled bass player with a multi-instrumental background starting at school on Euphonium and Flute. He soon recognised that his path was to be guitar-based. He is originally self-taught on both guitar and bass but has recently expanded his techniques through tuition on bass. He is progressing his music qualifications in the background.
Aidan has worked with bands playing indie, acoustic and rock. He played with indie rockers Monkeyface, who released a World Cup charity single in 2003 in aid of The Sheffield Children’s Hospital Trust. He has also written and released solo material on Chromium Records.
Aidan says “I am both humbled and privileged to be part of ChinWig. Working with such great people, I am sure to learn a lot from their experience and knowledge. The material is challenging and should keep me on my toes. That said I feel completely at home playing the style of music I love.” We feel privileged that he has joined us.
Aidan plays Gibson Thunderbird, Ernie Ball Musicman Stingray and Fender Precision basses through Trace Elliot amplification with Korg effects
Alan Bangert
Alan is our Sound Engineer and Road Manager. He has been doing just that in bands with Pete since before Phoenix Rising and so he brings many, many, many years of experience with him. Before that he was a roadie.
He understands logistics, equipment and venues intimately and makes our lives a lot easier. He ran the Rising Records PA Hire business and organised many a road crew for large and small gigs throughout the country.
He says “I think the band should be called ‘Four Old Farts and two Young ’uns”, but he is swift to point out that he is in fact a ‘Young ‘un’. Krys and Aidan have made no comments.
He says that his most embarrassing moment working with the band was when he was asked to be a stand-in drummer in a video shoot. He had to drum on the wall of a castle with a pair of twigs whilst being filmed. On the other hand, we think it was after we had sent him out to get an amp from the back of a van in which we had placed a sheep from the local field. When Al opened the door the sheep took the opportunity to escape covering Al in hoof prints and unmentionables. He looked (and smelled) very sheepish when he came back into the studio.
When asked why he was wearing a grass skirt in one of the pictures on the right he said, “because
I can carry it off...”. Not too sure about that...
